Some time back, pearly polished concrete floors were of admirable beauty. With the change in living styles and technological advancement, these floors has been done away with. With any imaginations and dreams, there has been unlimited color choices. When used together with concrete polishing, gem like effects is provided by the coloring. To ensure a magnificent concrete coloring, the below steps or ways should be taken into consideration.
Integral coloring. Production of an uniform color is evident from the mixing of concrete and colorant. The colorant is in two forms which are either liquid or powder. In instances where new installations are required, this integral is employed. It requires a mixing truck hence is used in large monochrome areas. This application is expensive, and one has to dig deep. The reason behind it is that there is total coloring to the depth of the slab.
The shake on colors. They consist of some fine ground pigments together with dry cement. The cement is broadcasted onto freshly positioned concrete. During the bull floating process, the powder is worked into this concrete. Bonding of cement powder with pigments is enhanced by bleed water. Because the pigments are concentrated in the top layer, polishing and grinding removes the color. This is suitable to be used on freshly placed concrete.
Acid stains. These are formulas of metallic salts, acid and water. The acid will chemically react with the minerals in the concrete to create a unique and mottled color effect. This is durable like the wear zone of a concrete it is applied to. The acid stains are said to be hazardous materials and will require extra precautions common to the acidic products. Any spills on the floor by the acid will create enduring features.
Acetone dyes. Acetone is commonly known as a reduction solvent with benefits of fast drying, but it has an inherent risk of being highly flammable. In addition, it cannot be used in occupied places due to its odor and toxicity. Once the floor has been polished, the color is then applied. The solvent dyes impart the vivid colors but are not UV stable. When installing the solvent based dyes, it is recommended to use explosion proof and respirators.
Water based dyes. These have several advantages. They dry quickly, easy to apply, safe and odorless. There is an ease with mixing of a variety of colors which can be matched according to user taste and preference. Regardless of the size of the area, it is easy to create striking patterns and effects. Gem-like effect is created from combining it with densifying, polishing, and hardening water based stains.
Color densifier. This has come as a recent innovation through which the fine pigments suspended in water are blended by an applicator having a lithium silicate densified. The pigments in the product are similar to shake-on colors because they are surface treatments hence polishing after the application removes color. For horizontal concrete, out or inside, protective treatments are recommended.
In conclusion, when making new installations, the above mentioned products will handle the job perfectly. In the case of restoration or refit, only the water based dyes, acetone dyes or acid stains will work out. Water based dyes are preferred as they help to maintain the environment.
